The four main Left student outfits at Jawaharlal Nehru University — All India Students’ Union (AISA), Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and All India Students’ Federation (AISF) — will not contest the April 25 JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections together, unlike last year.
In 2024, the four outfits had come together to form a ‘United Left’ alliance after many years.
They won the JNUSU polls, with the president from AISA, the vice-president from SFI, and the joint secretary from AISF.
The general secretary’s post went to the Ambedkarite organisation, Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), following the disqualification of the DSF candidate.
The representatives of the four organisations had said they contested under one panel to check the rise of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and its politics on the campus.
On Thursday, which was the last day to withdraw nominations, AISA and the DSF nominated joint candidates under the ‘United Left’ alliance.
On the other hand, the SFI and the AISF fielded their own candidates even as they underlined that talks are under way for an alliance with BAPSA.
The ABVP and the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India have also declared their candidates.
According to the schedule, the election committee was to release the final list of candidates on Wednesday.
However, the release was postponed by a day due to “security reasons”, according to a statement by the election committee.
The candidates’ list was not put out till the time of going to press.
Difference of opinion
Over the past few months, the ruling Left organisations have issued separate statements on the same incidents, exposing cracks within the alliance.
According to sources, differences exist among the outfits over issues including the president’s post, protests, and political ideologies.
